How to Attract Your Ideal Client as a Wedding Photographer (Without Making Them Up)

filed under

Your website is up and it looks beautiful. But you’re wondering if it’s actually going to attract your ideal client.

But first… what is your ideal client? And why could making one up actually be costing you bookings?

When I create a custom design for my clients, they tell me all about their “ideal client.” But most of the time, they’ve made that person up because that’s what the noise online tells you to do:

  • “Listen to social media.”
  • “Your ideal client is an imaginary person or couple.”
  • “Obsess over your portfolio.”

But here’s the truth: it’s not about a made-up client avatar. It’s about real people.

Stop Creating a Made-Up Client Avatar

Does this sound familiar?

Your ideal client is between 24–36, ambitious, independent, loves the beach, travelling, and road trips…

Well, that could be anyone. And making it up doesn’t actually help you. You need to stop chasing an avatar.

You Don’t Want to Be for Everyone

When you try to be for everyone, this can happen:

  • Cost-focused clients: Customers compare you on price, not value.
  • Ghosting: Clients don’t respond and keep you hanging because they’re constantly looking for someone “better.”
  • Demanding behaviour: After booking, clients become demanding because they don’t fully trust you.

If you’re a photographer, they might ask for look books or detailed shot lists.
If you’re a wedding florist, they may constantly change designs.

This usually happens when you haven’t positioned yourself as the expert.

Position Yourself as the Expert Wedding Photographer

Your ideal client will book you based on how you make them feel.

Here’s what you can show on your website — without ever speaking directly to your ideal client:

  • Confidence in your process and the results you deliver
  • How you help solve their problems
  • What could happen if they don’t work with you

When you communicate this clearly, you build trust before they even enquire.

How to Find the Right Clients (Without Making It Up)

You need to research your real clients — not invent them. Here’s how I do it:

  1. Listen
It’s not about you. Listen to your clients and take notes — especially the ones you loved working with.
  2. Look at Your Work
Show the photos and projects you want to do more of. Position your value and your goals through what you showcase.
  3. Send Surveys
I did this for over 7 years when I was a wedding photographer, and it was a game changer.

Your clients trust you. They will tell you their thoughts, feelings, and goals — if you ask.

Ask Yourself These Questions

  • Am I clearly communicating how I help my ideal clients on my website?
  • Am I showing the results they can expect?
  • Am I sharing my experience and what I truly believe in?

How to Put This Information on Your Website

When you communicate clearly and confidently on your website, you will naturally filter out price shoppers and attract clients who align with you.

It’s not about age or hobbies. It’s about:

  1. Trust
They trust you so much that they feel relaxed about the process.
  2. Connection
They feel connected to you, your story, and the way you work. They know you’re the one they’re meant to work with.
  3. Confidence in the Result
They feel happy and excited about the outcome before it even happens.

How Love Online Designs Can Help You Attract Your Ideal Clients

I help small businesses feel confident, credible, and proud to be found online.

When I work with clients one-on-one, we dig deeper. We go beyond the surface. And often I hear my clients say, “I’ve never heard myself say that before.”

That’s because when you create space to really talk about your business, your values, and your goals, your messaging becomes clearer.

I design to elevate your work instead of distracting from it.

It stays fresh and flexible, so you can confidently update your website as your business grows and evolves.
